African Renaissance Festival 15-16 August 2019

On behalf of the eThekwini Municipality, we are proud to host the 21st edition of the prestigious African Renaissance Festival in our warm city of Durban.

The theme for this year is ‘Enhancing Collective Prosperity Through Entrepreneurship’.

The most strategic priority for eThekwini Municipality is to ensure that ordinary members of society benefit from a democratic government which was ushered in on the 27th April 1994 and reaffirmed this year in the 2019 elections. The serious challenge that we need to address is that the political freedom we attained must be translated into economic freedom.

We, as eThekwini, have aligned our Integrated Development Plan and our Capital Budgets to the Sustainable Development Goal targets. These goals are a call to action that recognise that ending poverty must go hand in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.

Ultimately this agenda is about solidarity and cooperation and require an ‘all-of society’ approach to implementation. The Sustainable Development Goals focus on how we share our economic and natural resources fairly in a world with a growing population; they pave the way for economic development that leaves no one behind.

As a state institution, located in an economic hub, we are striving to transform the local economy. Our catalytic projects report indicates that the municipality is poised for massive economic growth over the next 10 to 20 years creating in excess of a million construction jobs and over 600 000 permanent jobs.

One of the ways of achieving economic growth is by creating a conducive environment for small businesses to participate. It is from these ranks of small and medium businesses, that the City’s future prosperity will be assured, consequently we are committed to promoting entrepreneurship and using our procurement system as an active vehicle for growth.

The African Renaissance Festival provides an opportunity to bring the people of eThekwini together to embark on a new path to transform lives everywhere. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all stakeholders to work with us to pursue the goal of creating more innovative and ambitious entrepreneurs and businesses that benefit all members of our communities in our City in the future.

Once again, as eThekwini Municipality we wish to welcome each and every one of you.
